How to Make Homemade Hummus Without the Most Expensive Ingredient

Traditional hummus is always made with six ingredients: chickpeas, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, garlic and the oily paste made from sesame seeds known as tahini. It’s that latter ingredient that gives the dip its special kick, but it’s also super expensive, and if you’re allergic to sesame, you’re missing out. Thankfully, Sarah Carey of Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food has figured out how to create a version that tastes just as delicious as the classic kind without having to use tahini. Take a look at how delicious it seems!

You’ll Need

– 1 small clove garlic
– Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
– Two 15-ounce cans chickpeas, rinsed and drained, 1/3 cup liquid reserved
– 2 tablespoons lemon juice (from two lemons)
– 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
– Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
– 1/4 cup Greek yogurt
– 3 to 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
– Crudités and pita chips, for serving

Yum! I think I like this version better than the original. The printable recipe is available over on the Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food site, so get yours and tell us if you give it a try.
