How to Store Onions, Garlic and Shallots So That They Last

Isn’t it the worst when you go to use up that half of an onion or those last few cloves of garlic only to find that they look something like this?

If you want your onions, garlic and shallots to last well after you buy them, here’s the best way to do it:

  1. Fold a flattened paper bag lengthwise and punch holes, 1″ apart, all over the bag.
  2. Open bag and insert your onions, garlic or shallots. Only fill bag up to halfway full.
  3. Fold over the top of the bag 2-3 times. Use a paper clip to hold the top of the bag in place.
  4. Label the top of the bag with a marker so you quickly know what’s in there!
  5. Store your bags in a cool, dark place.

Using this technique, your onions, garlic and shallots could last as long as 3 months!
