How to Save Money and Reduce Stress When Moving

Let’s face it: moving is stressful and can be overwhelming for anyone. Planning ahead and keeping on top of all that needs to get done, even months before, can be the difference between a manageable move and several mental breakdowns. Generation X Finance has some great moving advice for months before up until the day of the move. Here’s what they say you should do in the 2 weeks before you move:

  • Notify Utilities: make sure you give your utility companies at least a couple of weeks notice when you’re leaving your old place so that you aren’t charged for what you’re not using. You’ll also want to check out who services your new location since it might be as simple as having your company transfer service to your new place.
  • File Change of Address Forms: file change of address forms with all of the places you do business, like your place of employment, bank, investment companies, insurance policies, cell phone company, credit cards, etc. Even though you can set up mail forwarding at the post office, you’ll need to update your address with these companies at some point. And the earlier, the better.
  • Keep Track of Moving Costs: keep track of all of your moving costs because you might be able to deduct your moving expenses on your taxes. This would include big things like moving company expenses and truck rentals as well as small things like bubble wrap, boxes and tape.
