How to Make Your Own Cereal

Cereal is great for quick, no-fuss breakfasts. However, the stuff you buy at the grocery store can be expensive and unhealthy in most cases. Try out Frugal Village’s method for creating your own!

Gather Ingredients

You can use your own discretion when it comes to what you’d like to include in your cereal, but Frugal Village recommends the following:

  • 3 cups of oats
  • 6 tbsp of brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp of honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup of vegetable oil
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • Vanilla or almond extract (optional)

Mixing and Baking

Set oats aside in a large bowl. Then combine other ingredients in a small bowl. Pour this wet mixture into the bowl with the dry oats and mix well. Then all you have to do is bake. Coat a baking sheet in nonstick spray or oil and spread your mixture evenly onto the sheet. Bake cereal for about an hour until it is golden brown. (Frugal Village doesn’t specify an oven temperature, but we would guess that it shouldn’t be too high). Occasionally stir your cereal to disperse it. Once it’s golden brown, remove cereal and let it cool. You should be able to store this in a properly sealed container for up to 2 weeks.
