VIDEO: See Why Some People Are Calling Him “Dad Of The Year”

Has your mom or dad ever done something to help you out that made you feel like a total champ? Maybe they helped you learn long division and you got an A on a math test, or maybe they helped you prepare for an interview.

The point is, parents are great for pushing you to do your best—whether that’s figuratively or literally. One father is getting called the “dad of the year” for quite literally pushing his child to do his best during a soccer game.

The dad, Tom Munns of Wales, was watching the soccer game, when his son, who was the goalkeeper, walked a few feet away from the net at the exact wrong time—when the ball was flying right towards his goal!

Barely even thinking about it, Tom reached forward and pushed his son in the view of the ball in order to stop the ball from flying into the net. The child falls to the ground vertically, and his body was able to completely block the shot!

The ironic part about it is that moments later, as his son gets up (and consequently gets over the shock of his dad pushing him), someone from the other team is able to kick the ball right into the goal and score.

Despite Tom’s best efforts, it unfortunately didn’t work out too well for him in the end! Well, at least in terms of the game. But in terms of the internet, he’s become a sensation.

The video, which Tom posted to his Twitter account, has received almost 700,000 likes, nearly 270,000 re-tweets, and almost 7,000 comments, mostly of people laughing off the hilarious moment.

“Can’t stop laughing and watching this,” one commenter wrote, which seems to be the general consensus.

However, there are always some people who can’t find the humor in moments like these. “Too many parents like this think they can give advice but never kicked a ball in their lives, leave it to the coaches,” someone said, criticizing him.

“I feel so much better about my parenting,” another person wrote.

Some people just aren’t quite sure what to think at all: “I have watched this sooo many times…I am conflicted but yet I laugh.”

Others praised the little boy for being able to save the ball (even though in the end, the other team still scored): “What a save! Well done little fella.”

Then again, some people didn’t appreciate how the dad essentially cheated. “Sorry but he doesn’t get my vote—the lad probably would have saved it if it wasn’t for Dad interrupting him,” someone commented.

No matter what your opinion is, we’re pretty sure Tom wasn’t trying to hurt his kid, or even trying to be one of those soccer dads who always wants his kid to win. It seemed like a moment where he had a split second to think of what to do—and did the first thing that came to his head. We can’t blame him for that!

What do you think of the way this dad went about blocking the goal? Do you agree or disagree with the “Father of the year” title?
