In the history of dynamic duos, we’ve seen tag-teams like Batman and Robin, Thelma and Louise, Crocket and Tubbs, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and Groot and Rocket. In the realm of crimefighters, we can add another pair to the list: Cher and Meryl.

That’s right. Two women whose names ring in Hollywood history have their own tale to share about facing an attacker. It’s not a drill. And it’s not a movie.

Cher and Meryl Streep have a friendship that goes back decades, and Cher explained that one evening, they were hanging out at Meryl’s NYC apartment when they decided to go out. It was an evening the two wouldn’t forget. And it was New York in the ‘80s.

Cher told the story during an interview on James Corden’s Late Late Show:

“We were downtown in her old apartment, and she said, ‘I want some ice cream,’ and I said, ‘OK.’

I said, ‘Isn’t it dangerous down here?’ And [she said, ‘No no, it’s Little Italy on one side and Chinatown on the other side and we’ll be safe as two peas in a pod.’

And so we walk out and the first thing we see is some guy hitting cars with a brick. And then we walk down the street and we hear screaming. And we come around the corner, and this gigantic man is ripping the clothes off of this girl.

Meryl starts screaming, and I start screaming, and we run toward this gigantic man and he turns and starts running toward us. And just out of—I don’t know—we split and he ran through us. And so we went up to the girl, and all of her clothes were torn and she was clutching her bag.”

As they were helping the young woman put herself together, she made a funny comment, which you can hear by clicking on this video! Let’s just say she was beyond grateful.

These days, Cher is gearing up for Mamma Mia 2, as she’s playing the mom of Meryl Streep’s character. Can you believe it? In real life, the women are only four years apart, but Cher was happy to land the role where she gets to act and sing. The movie will be released later this summer.

At one time, Meryl told the same story and mentioned how the mugger ran off when he saw them running at him. Unsure of what would happen with the man, they took a chance and luckily were not hurt. We’re not sure how many people would run toward the danger like that (especially in the age of cell phone videos) but their actions are commendable.

Both Cher and Streep have been in the entertainment industry for eons, but both are also champions of women’s rights. Although hearing this story is somewhat unexpected, it’s not that surprising to learn they would stand up for someone.

To hear her tell the story herself in her inimitable Cher-style, and to find out how the would-be victim thanked them, check out the video below.

What do you think of Cher and Meryl’s heroics? Would you have done the same thing? Can you relate to the woman’s reaction when she was saved?
