Prepare To Be Impressed With This Airstream Trailer Makeover

In a time when we’re seeing an uptick in the popularity of tiny living, mobile homes are stepping into the spotlight. Like the Volkswagen Beetle, Airstream trailers seem to have their own cult-like following and vintage models are among the rock stars. Recognizable by their aluminum exteriors and “silver bullet” appearance, Airstreams have been around since the 1930s. Campgrounds and clubs for vintage Airstream owners exist throughout the world. Jordan Menzel wound up finding inner and outer peace through his 1976 Airstream restoration project. By luck of the draw, he scored a vintage 30-foot trailer for a steal and made an awesome home for himself and baby girl!

Courtesy of Houzz, in the video below we’re taken on a tour of the totally revamped trailer. Realizing the inside of his mobile home was a time capsule of the ‘70s, Jordan gutted it and decided what parts to rebuild or replace. Out with the old and in with the new! In true makeover fashion, we see his creativity and handyman skills at work with the cabinetry, which was redone from scratch. Instead of sticking with the original toilet system, he installed an environmentally friendly composting unit. Repurposed bamboo scrap flooring was used to cover a newly added subfloor, giving the space some flavor. Opting to keep it simple with the paint color, a neutral hue was used on the walls.

One of the best attributes is the versatile kitchen with its long countertop and minimalistic design. Jordan describes the counter space as “multifunctional”, as it pulls duty as a table, desk, and food prep area. It also serves as a place to dine or for a respite. Overhead cupboards house dishware while the chartreuse green cabinets below complement the stainless steel range. His eye for design doesn’t stop there though. Another cool feature is the handcrafted pantry made from pieces of dismantled pallets. The pantry frames a compartment for the refrigerator and also has extra storage. You will also notice small decorative accents like shelving and color-coordinated bedding.

Among the home’s impressive elements is the seating area. Where the throwback couch was formerly positioned, Jordan transformed it into a convertible eating nook. This charming dinette can turn into a makeshift sectional sofa, a coffee table spot and bed. It’s cozy enough to make the perfect forts too! Keeping his growing daughter in mind, Jordan made sure to give everything its own place and space in their Airstream. Plenty of undercover storage is used to maintain the openness of the home and accommodate their belongings.

This remodel was done with an emphasis on simplicity and minimalistic living, but was also a labor of love for this young dad. He used his personal turmoil as an opportunity to shift his attention to something else, and reminded himself that he could still create. And what a cool creation it is!
