6 Ten-Minute Methods for Organizing Your Finances

Organizing your finances can seem intimidating if you don’t take it in pieces. Financial Highway recommends that you get your finances together 10 minutes at a time. Take a look at some of their tips:

  1. Create Folders for Your Financial Documents: whether you do this physically or on the computer, make sure that all of your financial documents have an appropriate and easy to locate place. For example, have a folder for insurance policies, a folder for estate planning documents, a folder for medical records, etc. Just take the 10 minutes to set up the system. You can take time later to organize everything. When you have another 10 minutes later, set a timer and begin filing your papers or scanning documents in the correct places.
  2. Back Up Your Most Important Documents: scan important documents onto your computer to make sure you always have them available if something happens to the original. However, originals should go somewhere to keep them safe, i.e. a fire safe.
  3. List Your Accounts: having a master list of all of your accounts, along with the appropriate customer service numbers, can help you stay organized. Create a list of investment and retirement accounts, bank accounts, credit accounts and other financial information and put this in a secure location like a fire safe.
