5 Ways to Get What You Need at No (or Little) Cost

When we’re in need of something “new,” it can be a normal impulse to want to go to the store and buy that item. But there are many ways to procure the items we need without resorting to paying full price (or at all) for them. With a bit more effort, you can spend much less money. Here are some ideas from Financial Highway:

Get It Free

Before you go buy something, check out Freecycle and or the free sections on Craigslist and Kijiji. If you’re browsing the listings and don’t find what you need, put out a call for what you do need and see if anyone can help you out.

I know someone who refinished her kitchen through Freecycle and I’ve given away everything from a metal filing cabinet I was no longer using to a surplus of candles and craft paints. Once I was able to get brand new ink cartridges for my printer absolutely free.

Last weekend when I moved, I had to get rid of these beautiful yellow dressers that I could’t store anymore. I put out a curb alert on Craigslist and they were gone within hours. I received several emails telling me how beautiful they were though, and how lucky the person who got them was to have 2 such beautiful furniture pieces for their home.

Trade for It

Take getting something for free to the next level by bartering for it. Just check out the bartering sections on Craiglist and Kijiji.

Virtually any item or service can be bartered. For example, on Kijiji a voice coach was looking to trade singing or public speaking lessons for housekeeping services. Someone else was offering a portable air conditioner or carpet cleaning services in exchange for a flat screen TV. Ideally, bartering involves each party getting something that they consider more valuable than what they’re giving up.

Borrow It

How well do you know your neighbors? The answer to this question could have a lot to do with saving money. If you’re on good terms with your neighbors and offer to lend them things they run out of, you’ll be able to take advantage of the same courtesy.
