13 Fun Facts You Never Knew About “Roseanne”

The recent Roseanne reboot has meant the return of one of the most beloved sitcoms that ever aired. Actually, it’s probably safe to say that the original Roseanne was one of the greatest television shows of any kind, period.

The incredibly high ratings that the reboot has achieved, along with all the buzz surrounding the new series, show that love for Roseanne is still going strong. But it’s impossible not to think about the old show even while enjoying the new one.

And here’s the thing: as well-known as both the original and the reboot are, Roseanne has always had its share of controversies and secrets. Here are 13 incredible facts you probably never new about the show:

  1. Roseanne was almost kicked off her own show

Roseanne Barr is well-known for speaking her mind, and one argument she got into with producers of creator credits almost cost the star her job. Cast members John Goodman (Dan) and Laurie Metcalf (Jackie) stepped in to say “no way” and keep the peace.

  2. Roseanne’s success started a string of similar shows

Roseanne became such a hit that networks began creating other sitcoms starring comedians, including Seinfeld, Home Improvement, Grace Under Fire, and Ellen.

  3. There was a feud between Roseanne and Seinfeld

When Julia Louis Dreyfus accidentally parked in Roseanne’s spot one day, her famous temper flared.

  4. Roseanne’s temper showed on set

Producers from the ABC network sent Roseanne chocolate when the show shot to number 1 in the 90s. Apparently, she perceived it as an insult.

  5. The show was originally called Life and Stuff

While Life and Stuff kinda capture’s Roseanne’s attitude, it doesn’t have quite the same ring and simplicity as “Roseanne,” does it?

  6. Roseanne knew how to get around

According to Laurie Metcalf and others, Roseanne would sometimes demand a motorized wheelchair when she didn’t feel like walking around on set.

  7. Roseanne and Dan have wanted to reunite for a long time

There were plans to have Roseanne and Goodman team up on another show for years, but things just never got off the ground. Looks like the wait was worth it, judging by the ratings for the Roseanne reboot!

  8. There was always only one Dan

John Goodman was the first and only actor to audition for the part of Dan. The famous chemistry between him and Roseanne was instantaneous!

  9. There was almost a different D.J.

Macaulay Culkin auditioned to play the part of D.J., but Roseanne preferred Michael Fishman for the role. This would have been Culkin’s big break, which didn’t come until two years later, with Home Alone.

  10. The show was one of the first to have openly gay characters

Roseanne’s boss Leon (Martin Mull) and several other characters on the show proved that the show was not afraid to display honest characters and push social norms, even in a time when this was very controversial. Looks like that hasn’t changed in the reboot!

  11. Roseanne hated her wardrobe

Apparently, she wanted more t-shirts and jeans instead of the characters frumpy, tacky outfits (like the infamous chicken shirt)!

  12. The reboot house is a little different

There are some subtle differences in the famous couch and living room. Watch the reboot and see if you can spot them!

  13. The show was snubbed by the Emmys

Despite Roseanne’s massive success, the sitcom was never nominated for an Emmy during its original nine-season run. Maybe that will change now, and the show will get the official recognition it deserves!
