How to Avoid Making These 12 Common Eyeliner Mistakes!

I don’t know about you, but just typing the word eyeliner gives me anxiety. From cat eyes to smoky looks to even basic winged liner, my hard work in front of the mirror often amounts to one unflattering result—raccoon eyes! That’s why we searched far and wide for a video that not only outlines good eye lining practices, but also helps you fix the mistakes you’ve already made.

The host of this clip is famous beauty guru, YouTuber Tina Yong. If you haven’t heard of her, we’re betting your kids have! This well-groomed gal is going to guide us through her list of the top 12 ways we end up making a mess of our eyeliner. Here are some of our favorites.

  1. You line the WHOLE eye

As Tina says, we have all been guilty of doing this at one point or another. But, if “overlining” is still part of your makeup routine, let’s take some time to go over the facts.

Lining the entire eye area, from bottom to top and around both corners, actually makes the eyes appear smaller, something that is never flattering!

If you’re going for a wide-eyed look, our host recommends only using liner on the lid of the eye, as close to the lash line as possible. We promise, you will look so much more awake and alert when you know when to put down that liner!

  2. You rough up your eye area

If you’re at all focused on stopping stubborn crow’s feet from forming around your eye area, then listen up! You may be contributing to early signs of aging by making this big makeup snafu.

Yanking or lifting the eyelids while applying makeup not only irritates this delicate region, it can also cause deep wrinkles to form!

So, instead of using your finger to pull the lid, Tina recommends keeping your hands off your face when lining the eyes. Just lift your chin skyward and you should get similar results. This method will keep fine lines from forming and, as a bonus, will help you make less mistakes along the way—just ask Wayne Goss!

  3. You only show love to the bottom line

I’m not going to lie, this used to be my go-to technique in high school because, in those days, I thought that the dark line at the bottom of my eye made me look older.

Curiously, my teenaged self was actually right! It does make you look older, something anyone over the age of 18 doesn’t want! Tina even mentions that lining the bottom water line can make the eyes appear “unbalanced.”

So, to make those peepers pop while still preserving your natural eye shape, she recommends drawing a tight line on the lid and using a lighter brown shade on the bottom corner. If you want to widen the look of your eye, you can always carefully go in with a nude pencil liner on the lower water line. Talk about bright, beautiful eyes!
