If you’re not a very adventurous cook (or the cook of your house is away and you have to fend for yourself like Chris over at Man Made DIY), this post is perfect for you. Frozen pizza can be a simple, cheap dinner solution. However, most frozen pizzas are lacking in true, good pizza flavor. By simply upgrading elements of the crust, sauce, cheese and toppings, you can actually be on your way to a respectable meal on the cheap. Here are some of Chris’ ideas:
- Add More (or Better) Cheese: try throwing some fresh mozzarella or a higher quality Italian cheese blend on your frozen pizzas. Youu could also try adding more complex cheese to cut the overly sweet taste of many frozen pizzas. A grating of good parmigiano or romano could do the trick!
- Use Up Your Leftovers: look for leftover things like olives, capers, leftover Rotisserie chicken or lunch meat. A little bit of chopped onion can also add a nice crunch. If the flavor is too strong for you, rinse your onion in a sieve or colander under cold water first for about 20 seconds.
- Go Nuts: add some toasted pinenuts, walnuts, slivered almonds, etc. for a nice protein and flavor boost and a little bit of texture.
- Add a Salad: fresh greens on top of a pizza is an emerging (and delicious) trend. Try tossing some arugula, spring or mesclun mix with some lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper over your frozen pizza for an instant, cheap, gourmet-style meal.
